    Blackjack — The Complete Guide

Blackjack (21) has the lowest house edge of any casino game — if you play it right. The goal is simple: get closer to 21 than the dealer without going over. But beneath the rules lies a layer of optimal decisions called basic strategy, and the gap between a player who knows it and one playing on gut feeling is several times the house edge.

    Rules in brief

Cards 2–10 count at face value, J/Q/K count as 10, and an ace counts as 1 or 11. You get two cards and decide: hit (another card), stand (stop), double (double your bet for one more card), split (split a pair), or surrender (if allowed).

The dealer must play by a fixed rule — usually hit until 17, then stand. No judgment calls, which is exactly what makes the game mathematically solvable.

Basic strategy — the key rules

    • Always split A-A and 8-8; never split 10-10 or 5-5
    • Stand on hard 17 or higher
    • Hit on 12–16 when the dealer shows 7+; stand when dealer shows 2–6
    • Double on 11 almost always, and on 10 when dealer shows 9 or lower
    • Hard 8 or lower — always hit

    Insurance and side bets

Insurance pays 2:1 when the dealer shows an ace, but the odds the hole card is a 10 are less than a third — so it's a losing bet on average. Same goes for side bets like 21+3 or Perfect Pairs: exciting, but with a house edge many times higher than the main game.

    Card counting

Counting (e.g. Hi-Lo) tracks the ratio of high to low cards remaining and lets you raise your bet when the edge shifts to you. It's legal, but requires a physical table with good deck penetration. Online, the deck is reshuffled every hand — so counting doesn't work in online blackjack or live casino with continuous shuffling.

    What about poker?

Even in perfect blackjack, the edge stays with the house (~0.5%). In poker there's no house edge at all — only rake and rakeback, and your opponents are other players. If you enjoyed the analytical side of basic strategy, poker preflop charts will feel very familiar.
