Table and action terms
Blinds — the forced bets posted by the two players left of the dealer button. Button — the dealer position, the best seat because it acts last after the flop. Check — passing the action without betting. Call — matching the current bet. Raise — increasing it. Fold — giving up the hand.
Street and board terms
Preflop — before any community cards. Flop — the first three community cards. Turn — the fourth. River — the fifth and final. Board texture describes how connected or coordinated those cards are.
Strategy vocabulary
Pot odds — the price the pot offers relative to the call. Equity — your share of the pot based on the chance to win. Outs — cards that improve you to the best hand. C-bet — a continuation bet by the preflop aggressor. 3-bet — the third bet in a sequence. GTO — a balanced, unexploitable strategy. ICM — the chip-to-prize conversion model used in tournaments.
Player types and slang
Fish — a weak, losing player. Shark — a strong winning player. Nit — extremely tight. LAG / TAG — loose-aggressive and tight-aggressive styles. Tilt — emotionally driven bad play. Bad beat — losing with the statistically better hand.
