Ante — Poker Term Explained

An ante is a small mandatory bet that goes into the pot before the deal, on top of the blinds. In a traditional ante structure every player at the table posts their own ante. In a Big Blind Ante structure, common in modern tournaments, the ante is collected from that hand's big blind on behalf of the table — so the collection method differs, and the exact ante amount is set by the event structure. Either way the pot starts the hand with money in it, so a relatively cheap open wins a bigger prize.

The extra forced money in the pot changes the pot odds: opening or stealing is rewarded better relative to the risk, which can justify wider opening ranges, and for the same reason wider blind defence can pay off too — otherwise you pay an ante every hand and fold almost always. The exact adjustments depend on the format, your position and effective stacks. Late in a tournament, when antes are large relative to stacks, all-in-or-fold decisions carry much more weight.

The common leak is playing the same ranges as before the antes arrived — paying an ante every hand and never claiming a pot back. The rarer opposite error is treating the ante as justification for any call: the pot is bigger, but your hand did not improve, and an early-position open still needs to be a tight range.
