Game Theory Optimal (GTO) — Poker Term Explained

Game Theory Optimal describes a strategy that cannot be beaten in the long run no matter what the opponent does, because every counter-strategy earns the same or less. In poker that means balanced ranges: value hands and bluffs in ratios that make an opponent indifferent between calling and folding, and mixed frequencies where the same hand is sometimes bet and sometimes checked. GTO is a defensive benchmark — it guarantees you cannot be exploited, not that you extract the most.

Learn GTO to know the baseline, then deviate for profit. Solver outputs are most useful as principles rather than memorised charts: bet bigger on boards that favour your range, keep enough bluffs to protect your value bets, defend the blinds wide enough that stealing is not free. Against weak opponents, maximum profit comes from exploitative deviations — over-folding against a player who never bluffs, over-bluffing against a player who never calls. GTO tells you what leaving the baseline costs, which is exactly what makes a deliberate deviation safe.

Copying solver frequencies against opponents who are nowhere near balanced. Playing a perfect balanced strategy against a player who folds to every river bet leaves money on the table, and mixing at low stakes is usually just an excuse to avoid the simpler, more profitable exploit.
