Pot Odds — Poker Term Explained

Pot odds compare what a call costs with what it can win. If the pot holds 100 and the bet is 50, calling costs 50 to win 150, so you need to be right 50 / 150 = 33% of the time to break even. Everything else — outs, draws, reads — is a way of estimating whether your hand clears that number. The calculation is arithmetic, not opinion, and it is the single most testable skill in poker.

Work in percentages rather than ratios: required equity equals the call amount divided by the final pot after your call. Then compare it with your hand's equity. On the flop a nine-out flush draw has roughly 36% equity to the river and about 19% for the next card alone, so the street matters — against a bet you will face again on the turn, use the one-card number unless you are closing the action. Add implied odds when the hand can win a big pot later, and subtract reverse implied odds when hitting your card can still leave you second best.

Using river equity for a flop call when another bet is coming. That single error turns a marginal fold into a call and is one of the most common leaks at low stakes. The second is forgetting that the money you already put in the pot is not yours — it is part of the pot, so it never makes a bad call better.
