    Squeeze — Poker Term Explained

A squeeze is a re-raise made after one player opened and at least one other called. The pressure is doubled — the opener fears the callers and the callers fear the opener — so fold frequency is very high. Typical sizing is four to five times the open.

    • Recommended in-position squeeze size: about 4x the original open
    • Recommended out-of-position squeeze size: about 4.5–5x the open
    • Add roughly +1 big blind of sizing per extra cold-caller
    • Typical squeeze frequency for a solid player: 3–6% of eligible spots

How it works at the table

A squeeze needs three ingredients: an opener, at least one cold-caller, and you behind them with a raise. The caller is the reason the play works. They have already shown a range without a 3-bet in it — usually medium pairs and suited broadways — so they fold a lot to extra pressure, and the original raiser now has to worry about being squeezed out of a multiway pot they cannot control. Both opponents are playing against two ranges instead of one.

    How it changes your strategy

Size bigger than a normal 3-bet: four times the open in position, four and a half to five times out of position, plus roughly one extra big blind for every additional caller. Squeeze most often from the button, cutoff and small blind, where a late-position squeeze also buys you the position advantage for the rest of the hand. Balance your value hands (QQ+, AK) with suited hands that flop well and can continue — A5s, KQs, suited connectors — rather than offsuit junk, so you still have a hand when someone calls.

    The mistake most players make

Squeezing too small is the most expensive error: a 3x squeeze into two opponents prices both of them in and turns a fold-equity play into a bloated multiway pot with an overpair you cannot defend. The other mistake is squeezing with hands that have no plan after a call — offsuit gappers that flop nothing and cannot barrel.
