Value Bet — Poker Term Explained

A value bet is a bet you want called. The test is a single question: if my opponent calls, am I ahead of the hands that would call? That is a question about their range, not about how strong your hand feels. Top pair is a clear value bet against a range full of second pairs and draws, and a clear mistake against a range that only continues with two pair or better.

Size to the calling range, not to your own hand. Against a wide, sticky range, bet bigger — the extra chips come from hands that were calling anyway. Against a narrow range that only continues with strong holdings, bet smaller or check. On the river, thin value is where most of the money hides: betting a middling hand that beats slightly worse hands is uncomfortable and profitable, provided you would still be ahead of the range that calls. Three streets of medium value bets usually earn more than one big river shove that gets called only by better.

Betting the river with a hand that beats the folding range and loses to the calling range. That is not a value bet, it is a donation with extra steps. The mirror error is checking back a decent hand out of caution and giving up a bet that would have been called by worse two times out of three.
