    Check-Raise — Poker Term Explained

A check-raise checks to induce a bet and then raises over it. It is one of the strongest pressure tools in poker, usable both for maximum value with monsters and as a powerful bluff on the right board texture.

    • Standard flop check-raise sizing: about 3x their bet
    • Works best on low, connected boards that miss a preflop raiser's range
    • Increase against high c-bet, high fold-to-raise opponents
    • Always include draws, not only made hands, so the action is not readable

How it works at the table

A check-raise is two moves in one: you check to let the opponent bet, then raise. It only exists out of position, and that is the point — checking hands the initiative to the aggressor, and raising takes it back after they have committed chips and defined their range. Because most players bet a wide range after they raised preflop, the check-raise attacks the widest range they will ever have.

    How it changes your strategy

Build the raising range around board texture. On boards where you can credibly hold the strongest combinations — low, connected flops that a preflop raiser mostly misses — check-raise with a mix of made hands and draws so the same action can be either. Size around three times their bet on the flop. Against a player who c-bets almost every flop and folds to aggression, increase the frequency; against a player who only bets strong hands, drop it, because their range does not fold. Follow through: a check-raise that gives up on every turn is a leak opponents learn quickly.

    The mistake most players make

Check-raising only with the nuts. It is the most readable pattern in poker and it means your strongest hands win the smallest pots, because everyone folds. The other mistake is check-raising a board that hits their range hard, where they simply continue and you have built a large pot from the wrong seat.
